In a previous article, we discussed Xiaomi's August Mega Event & What to Expect. According to an announcement from Redmi's official profile on Weibo, the upcoming Redmi K60 Extreme Edition is the first Xiaomi phone that promises to provide four generations of Android updates and five years of security updates.
This phone will also be the first in line to get MIUI 15, which is the software that runs on Xiaomi phones.
Interestingly, the announcement doesn't talk about how many upgrades the MIUI version will have, even though the MIUI version on Xiaomi and Redmi phones often determines what features are available more than the basic Android version.
The Redmi K60 Extreme Edition was released in China last week. These update promises are currently only for this phone in China.
Most people believe that this phone will be rebranded as the Xiaomi 13T Pro and will be available in other places like Europe, although Xiaomi hasn't officially said anything about that. The company also has yet to say if they'll make the same update promise for more phones and in other parts of the world.
If Xiaomi does actually make this same promise for places outside of China, it will be on par with Samsung and OnePlus. Right now, Samsung and OnePlus offer the best deal when it comes to updates on Android.
They promise to provide four Android generation upgrades and five years of security updates for Galaxy phones and OnePlus flagship phones. On the other hand, Google promises three Android generation upgrades and five years of security updates for its Pixel phones.
There's more to Android updates than just the number of updates. The other important thing is how often they come. If a company promises lots of updates but takes a really long time to actually deliver them, it could be better for users, especially since security updates should be given out as quickly as possible.
MIUI has been known for taking a while to give out updates. Xiaomi has yet to say how often they'll give out updates under this new policy, but hopefully, we'll find out more soon.
