In 2019, Google introduced a fresh brand identity for its mobile operating system, Android. After nearly four years, Android is revamping its logo, featuring a new wordmark and a three-dimensional rendition of its iconic robot head.
The updated wordmark departs Android's previous choice of an all-lowercase style, as it begins with a capitalized "A." The font used in this new wordmark exhibits perfectly rounded letters "n" and "r," harking back to the design of the futuristic 2008 and more subdued 2014 wordmarks.
Contrary to the previous flat design, the robot head has also transformed, adopting a three-dimensional appearance that undoubtedly catches the eye. The introduction of the 3D Android head was first witnessed at CES 2023. While the lowercase "android" still accompanied it, Google showcased a range of expressive versions using various materials, such as a tire, when referring to Android Auto.
This updated figure reemerged at the I/O 2023 event, accompanied by the diverse designs and materials (e.g., disco ball) that Google used to describe Android as the "Most expressive OS."
The new wordmark and head were initially seen together in an Android advertisement highlighting first-party apps on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Flip 4.
Today, Google confirmed the existence of this "new brand identity" and indicated that further details would be disclosed in the future.
As a teaser, they showcased elements of the new brand identity on different surfaces, including their CES booth and various campaign materials like digital and banner ads. More information will be shared in the upcoming months.
Presumably, the new logo will be featured on the boot screen of all Android devices. Currently, the brand is displayed as "Powered by Android." Consequently, Google should introduce this update alongside the release of Android 14 later this year.
